A new Siri Remote may be in the works, but don't get excited

An unreleased device referenced in a beta suggested that there may be a new Siri Remote coming, but we're not expecting a huge shake-up.

Monday's macOS Tahoe beta hinted at an upcoming Siri Remote, referenced as "ATVRemote1,5" in the code. This wouldn't be the first time that we've heard there's a new Siri Remote in the works, either; it's expected to launch alongside the new Apple TV.

That doesn't mean that the remote is going to get a major revamp. It could be as simple as a slight tweak to the design.

After all, there are already multiple part numbers for the Siri Remote. This includes:

  • A2854 (Siri Remote 3rd gen)
  • A2540 (Siri Remote 2nd gen)
  • A1962 (Siri Remote 1st gen)
  • A1513 (original Siri Remote)

Each of those releases came with its own changes, minor or major. The biggest change was between the first and second generation Siri remote models, where Apple opted for the thicker, silver aluminum body on the newer unit.

Of course, Apple may be revamping the Siri Remote for another reason. After all, Apple is still rumored to be working on the upcoming home automation device, which we've taken to calling HomeHub.

The device is said to strike balance between a HomePod and an iPad. A redesigned Siri Remote could, theoretically, remote control the HomeHub, like how the white plastic remote could be used with the G5 iMac, or original Mac mini for Front Row.
