Go to Settings. If there is an Apple ID name at the top, ask the seller to log out completely and perform a Factory Reset (Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase All Content and Settings). Make sure you can set up the device from scratch.
Swipe down from the top right to open Control Center, long press the brightness slider. If the "True Tone" option is missing, the screen has likely been replaced with a non-genuine third-party screen. Also, inspect for uneven brightness or touch deadzones.
Go to Settings → Battery → Battery Health. If the health is below 80%, the battery is degraded and will need replacement soon. If it says "Important Battery Message" or "Service", it might be a non-genuine replaced battery.
Set up Face ID or Touch ID in Settings. Test unlocking the device multiple times. Face ID sensors can break easily from water damage or drops, and repairing them is extremely expensive.
Open the Voice Memos app and record your voice to test microphones. Open the Camera app, switch between all lenses, test optical zoom, and verify that autofocus works and lenses are clean of internal dust.
