Madden football returns to Mac for the first time in 19 years

Madden finally returns to the Mac after a 19 year absence, making "Madden NFL 27 Arcade Edition" the biggest football release in Apple Arcade history.

The game launches August 6 and includes current NFL teams, realistic simulation gameplay and a season-based Franchise mode. Players can also jump into individual games through Quick Play.

Franchise mode puts players in charge as general managers, where they can build a roster, manage season-changing storylines and try to win over the team's fan base. A weekly story engine will drive those narratives, while dynamic player ratings will change based on real NFL performances.

Madden NFL 27 Arcade Edition will support controllers across iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV. Apple hasn't listed Apple Vision Pro as a supported device for the game.

Madden gives Apple Arcade a major sports name

Madden is one of the most recognizable brands added to Arcade, and it fills an obvious gap in the service's growing sports catalog. Apple already offers basketball, soccer, golf and retro-style football games, but it hasn't had a modern NFL simulation carrying Madden's name.

The lack of ads and in-app purchases also fits Apple Arcade's strongest pitch. Subscribers get the full included game rather than a free download built around virtual currency, recurring prompts or paid upgrades.

Apple calls Madden NFL 27 Arcade Edition a "complete Madden NFL game," but the announcement only confirms Franchise and Quick Play modes. Apple and Electronic Arts haven't provided a full comparison with the console and PC versions or confirmed whether other familiar Madden features will be included.

Apple Arcade is adding more football games

Retro Bowl College+ will also join Apple Arcade on August 6. The pixel-art management game lets players coach one of 250 college teams.

NFL Retro Bowl '27 follows on September 3 with a new Gauntlet Mode. Players will start with limited resources and try to complete a 15-game winning streak while choosing between safer matchups and stronger opponents with better rewards.

Apple is also updating several sports games already on the service. NFL Retro Bowl '26 will add historic Super Bowl challenges on July 16, while NBA 2K26 Arcade Edition has added Tyrese Maxey as a Paragon player and a 2016-2024 era for The Association mode.

The expanded lineup also includes Football Manager 26 Touch, Mini Football Legends, PGA Tour Pro Golf and Skate City: New York. Madden gives that collection a much stronger centerpiece, especially for players who want a traditional football game rather than a retro or management-focused alternative.

Apple Arcade costs $6.99 per month in the United States and can be shared with as many as six family members. It's also included in Apple One plans, while customers who buy an eligible new iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple TV can receive three months free.
